We had some good soaking rains recently (thanks to Hurricane Hermine!) This brought out a strange and wonderful visitor at our doorstep. At first it scared me a bit as out of the corner of my eye, it looked like a finger moving on its own (like in those campy horror movies). It was the size of a finger and the color of a hot dog.
I couldn't identify it on my own but reached out to a gentleman at a website. This was his response:
"Caterpillar will never yield a moth as it has parasitoid wounds, but it is a caterpillar of a Eumorpha Fasciatus, the Banded Sphinx."
In looking up the moth on his website, it's a shame it'll never become its intended form since the moth is really beautiful. Here's a link to his sites if you wish to look up more (one for the moths; one for their larvae):
Thank you Mr. Oehlke!
