Millet melee

Now that the weather is turning cooler here, the blackbirds are swarming the feeders, and the home-grown millet along the pond is staging a feathered frenzy.

Did you plant the millet? I love that picture of them eating and the water in the back ground. I have grown some millet for the birds but never that much.

You know, I've always want to plant millet. I'm going to have to get some seed! I can put it near my creeks!...:)JP

I don't think I've ever seen so many red winged blackbirds in one place before. Great shot!

Well technically I planted the millet - by spreading bird seed and hen scratch down along the pond shore for the ducks and turtles to eat. As the pond receded over the summer, it spouted and grew from there until it ripened recently. I like how it gives the birds a more natural approach to their foraging (and gives me a little break on feeder patrol!) :)

Those Red Wing Black birds are some really hungry birds--They bring their freinds and family and gobble up everything at the feeder--But I'm okay with that, most of the time! :-)

Great picture! I've used millet for some gluten free recipes and most of my family members thought it was "for the birds!"

I usually get a few millet plants growing under my feeder -- but that's a great idea to get some growing around the pond. I'll have to try that next spring. We don't get many red-winged blackbirds here -- just the black ones.

Very cool picture! I also looked at some of your older posts and love the one with the dog pics!

I like this scene. So real, and you are right, more natural for the birds.

How beautiful. They were having a feast for sure. I will spread some of those seeds near our pond too :)

I see you have the red winged black birds. We have those and the yellow winged blackbirds also. For some reason, the birds around here, eat everything BUT the millet. I find that odd. Maybe I'll try planting it and see what happens! Thanks for the idea.

That is a truly lovely picture! Why don't you just kick off your shoes and let your feet dangle in that pond? I could go for a swim long about now!
