More "barkage"

These canine kids...  BB (our Rott mix) actually inflicted the injury to this tree when she had a critter in it one evening (I think it was a raccoon that did get away).  But days later, little Louise and big boy Baron stopped by to have a taste as well.
I'd hate to see what they'd do if we lived in an area that had sugar maples...

It is that weird or what. I've never seen a dog licking a tree or eating bark. Is it the sap, they like? Neat photos.

toooo funny!!! LOL I love it. mine would do the same thing, what is it with trees and sticks and bark, mine love to strip the bark off the pine limbs that fall. we have 9 very large trees, 2 of them pine on our little 100 x 100 lot so they have lots to work with. wish i had a place like yours, i stare at your home every time i come and wish

Crazy dogs! lol :)

Wow, I hope mine don't catch on to this craze! I have to keep mine away from my young trees but they don't bother the established ones.

That's strange, I have never seen dogs do that. Maybe the sap is coming up? I hope the tree isn't damaged. Goofy dogs....

I wonder what is in that tree bark that they need?
We had a place in our pasture when I lived at home the the cows would go crazy at and eat dirt, roll in it and when my Dad had it tested it was really high in a certain kind of mineral. That is very interesting.

This is a fine series of these dogs doing their thing. I can imagine how good it smells with their excellent noses! An interesting post for sure.

I think the sugar maples would run away...or say "that tickles!" : )

You need to feed those dogs a decent meal! Ooops...I see they have been eating pretty decent meals!

I bet that tree smells delicious to a dog.

Gus likes to eat the bark out of the flowerbeds. If he starts snacking on my ONE small tree I might have to muzzle him.

Being a bird dog owner, I think it is likely that they are licking the scent from the raccoon or what ever ran up the tree. Licking, and licking their noses, is a way of "soaking up" scent.

These are fun pictures, Ms. T.

One thing, though - I've never heard of dogs sharpening their teeth!! I'd try checking on their diet, they seem to be lacking some kind of minerals.

We have to remember that, with the economy as it is, manufacturers are doing what they can to make products as cheap as possible. And that includes dog and cat food. There is a truck load of uses for soy beans... if you know what I mean. There is too little real meat in these cans anymore. You think?

Love ya!

I'd hate to see what they would do if that tree were smaller.

Mix some red pepper and water and paint on it or maybe use some redhot sauce. I suspect that will stop it.

Cracks me up! You have to wonder what goes on in their heads sometimes. "Piquant with a little taste of raccoon sweat..."
