Great Blue Heron - Act III

When last we left our heron hero, he was struggling with his prize catfish catch...

You can see the frustration in his face as he tries to figure out what to do next.

Finally getting it faced towards him...

...he makes an attempt at swallowing the catfish.
To be continued one more time if you're not tired of him yet...

Oh my. I really didn't think he was actually going to swallow it. I thought he would pick and tear at it. Guess I don't know my herons.

Great shots!
Have a nice weekend.

Terrific shots. He must not have had any problem with those whisker 'stingers' that catfish have. I would think that would hurt trying to swallow them, but I guess that's why I'm not a Great Blue Heron.

What's that saying? "your eyes are bigger than your stomach. I'm with Nancy regarding the choking.

Deb said...

Did he bite off more than he could chew?

Have you ever saw one sitting? As I was looking at the pictures I thought of that. I always see them standing or eating but never sitting on eggs.

I feel the need to cheer "Go, Buddy! You got it!".
I am always floored by what water birds can swallow!
Amazing shots!

We're back and a BIG thank you for following along with my meager posting while touring the Southwest. Let me say I found Texas wonderful, the people too. I just should have stayed there instead of moving on. I have a heron story to tell from Texas, but I like your tale so much better. Great shots.

Does he get choked and you have to do the Heimlich maneuver on him??? I could not resist that...it looks to big for his mouth. Can't wait to see the finish.

I'm loving this blue heron story here. and your blue bonnet photos are magnificent. but back to the heron. I was unaware that they caught and ate such large fish. I was thinking they ate minnows or some such. shows you what I know. but this guy is fascinating. great story telling! have a great weekend texwisgirl.

I still can't believe he wanted to eat it all. Must have been really hungry. At least it should hold him for a while. How lucky were you to be right there to see it all.
Great catch.

If you move the pictures fast enough, it's like those old fashioned movies. :)

They just swallow the fish whole. They must have a strong digestive system, huh?
