Listen to the mockingbird...

These birds have such a plucky attitude as well as a wonderful song repertoire.  They can also be quite aggressive in defending their nests in more populated areas, but here in the country, they have a lot of space to do their thing.

Wielding that tail!

And if you truly want to 'listen' and see the mockingbird in action, here's a video I shot a few years back of one doing his best animated mating calls off the power pole.  Sorry for the wind noise...

I love the feistiness (sp?) and song of a mockingbird--Just don't go near their nest because as you know, they have something to say about that!

I guess that's why they are the state bird of TEXAS....

I was looking at the pictures thinking, "I wonder what they sound like," then I saw the video! :)

Great shots and a bonus with the video. I had never heard a mocking bird before and it is remarkable how alike the voice is to our most famous imitator, the Lyrebird. They both have that resonating watery quality to their call. Unfortunately the Lyrebird has also some not so savoury bits in his song like whipcracks, which are entertaining and rifle shots from the early settles as well as the not so nice chainsaws and motor noises.

Beautiful shots!

Now are these the birds that pretend they are injured to draw you away from their nest? They walk on the ground with their wind out likes it hurt? When in fact they are just trying to get you away from their nest? Am I think of the right bird?

I think prettiest in flight. They sure can be mean though. We have a lot of them here. They do have a lot of "Character"!

These are great photos.

I'll never forget the mockingbird that built a nest at my office a few years ago. She built it in the hedges where I park my car so every time I got out of the car my head was dive-bombed. :/

We have them here too. The best for me is when they start singing very late at night (when it is cool), or very early in the morning, when it is still dark. It is such a pleasure!

I loved your pictures!
