Rural Route

Have you seen the Chevy Chase movie, "Funny Farm", where a NYC couple decides to move to the country?  Remember their crazy mailman, Crumb Petrie - by the time he gets to their place on his route, he's 'pretty liquored up and pissed off?'  Well, every time I see this rural carrier, I think of Crumb Petrie.
It's a little hard to see in this photo since he's tipped towards the shoulder, but this pick-up truck has seen better days.  The roof is rusted, the hood is bleached and worn, the body is a bit beaten up, bumper bent.  However, it epitomizes what a rural carrier vehicle should look like - pretty much ready for anything.
No, this is not our mailman - he delivers on a route towards town.  And alas, he doesn't try to run you down while tossing your mail out the window with a hideous, drunken, deranged cackle.  Instead, this gentleman nicely deposits the mail in its intended spot and goes on about his way with nary an evil laugh...

We have 2 mailmen. On delivers by noon and the other guy just gets here when he gets here. Would you like some mail with your dinner this evening? Why... yes we would thank you very much.

Neither rain nor snow nor gloom of night nor blah blah blah shall stay these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds....

Love, love, love Funny Farm. Can't beat old school Chevy Chase.

I wouldn't want to be a postman - our version of mailman. They have to be out in all weathers.

Funny Farm is one of my favorite movies to watch when I need a laugh. Even though we live in town, we still have a mail carrier like this one. He drives a boring car and isn't all that interesting, he just puts the wrong mail in my box all the time. ;(

Our rural carrier also drives a truck. I love that movie. Totally cracks me up.

Love Chevy Chase! Never thought the mail would be delivered in anything but a little jeep:@)

*giggle* I love the movie Funny Farm! I'm glad this guy is nicer then the mail deliverer on the movie. Though he was funny! Ha!

Happy August!

We have a female mail carrier who drives a two-toned pickup just about as beat up as this one!

Our mail"lady" also uses a private vehicle but it is in a little better shape than that one! :)

my husband just said yesterday, he missed his ratty rusted toyota because he could park it anywhere and he did not care if it was hit, dinged, or even stolen. who would want it. he loved it, but it was our 3rd car and the insurance was killing us.

Oh my! Our rural mail carrier does remind me of Funny Farm. She doesn't yell out the window but she does hit the gas so hard that the pickup throws gravel up after every stop!

Funny post, has been ages since I have seen that movie - it was a hoot!

You have to commend the postal carriers...they deal with not only the weather but nasty dogs in the none rural areas! I think they carry pepper spray!

Our not so rural carrier used to drive a light green old jeep. They upgraded her to a real postal vehicle recently so she is legit now. I saw her the other day parked by the pond taking a break. I liked that.

Well I can say this about nearly every movie LOL but I have not seen that. Our carrier drives a bright yellow jeep.

Hi Texwisgirl, Mr. Blandings builds his dream house is similar so is the remake, Money Pit. I just thought I'd mention those. I also have a private contract-type US Postal Service carrier. Have a super great day and stay cool!

I was expecting a vehicle with RHD (right hand drive). I worked for a Subaru dealer for a time, they make models with the steering wheel on the opposite side of what we are used to for rural mail carriers. I always thought that would feel really odd to drive.

Too funny. Long as he gets the job done...

I rode with a rural carrier one time. He drove this beat-up old monster station wagon of an unknown make. I sat behind the steering wheel while he drove from the passenger side, left foot operating the gas and brake and steering with his left hand. What a trip! I am impressed you can recall that character's name from the movie.

That's funny ... and is that bird poo or rust???

One of my classmates(now deceased) was a rural mail carrier. One man on her route used to leave her a watermellon in the mailbox that was so big she could hardly remove it.

I loved Funny Farm. The mailman was so funny. Not even a cackle out of this guy? To bad! That would be awesome!!!!

A fine series of this mail carrier. One coming through the drive-thru at Starbucks has a Subaru with right side steering. Her car is one of the more used-up vehicles ever to come through the drive-up!

Well, he obviously hasn't seen the movie! That's a wonderful truck. I love to see vehicles who have obviously served their owners well.

I hadn't thought about Funny Farm in ages! Thanks for the grins. Looks as though the truck has had a busy life! Fun shots for the day.

We have rural delivery and our carrier's SUV is every bit as beat up and rusty but he's never failed to deliver the mail, no matter how bast the weather, in the 7+ years we've lived here.

I've talked to him a lot over the years and he's a real nice guy but I still give him plenty of room if I encounter him out on the road, barreling along while sitting on the wrong side steering with his left hand!

T, and you made me smile too at the memory!

I have seen the movie, and it is so funny!
I love your mail delivery vehicle. A nice change from the typical mail trucks!

I loved that movie as well, and think that our UPS guy could be the mailman from that movie. Each time he's dropped something off, I hear him laughing as he drives down the driveway....

rural mail carriers drive all sorts of crazy vehicles!!!

even so, i'm glad he didn't notice you taking his picture. ;o)

I cannot comment on the movie. Chevy Chase would have scared me away from it, for sure!

But I can say that I really like the mail people around here. We've had three different ones, in these twelve years, and they were all very friendly, funny and corteous. One of them left the job and is my best friend to this date!

our mailman is 82, and on oxygen...we get mail however only three times a week and if the weather holds him up then he calls and ask if we can wait...

seriously. Its like living with one big extended family out here, but we love it anyways - just like family LOL

Hell, that looks like a purty good pick-em-up truck to me! You should see some of the rust buckets driving around up here. And if you can't see em, you sure as hell can smell them! LOL

Debbie @ Swampbilly Ranch said...

I loved that movie! I couldn't tell if that was chipping paint or bird poop on the bed rails.

Angela said...

Oh my gosh! That is just hilarious! I LOVE the movie Funny Farm. Have it on VHS but have been looking for it on DVD. I finally found it on DVD yesterday at WM in the $5 pile! We watched it last night! I can so see that truck being the mailman in the movie too! lol
