Dickcissal - a new bird for me

This little guy showed up at the feeders one day, mingling with the cardinals and finches.  I had a hard time pinning down his I.D., but I think I got it right.

Loved his russet wing feathers, but those bright yellow splashes wouldn't allow him to blend in as a sparrow.

I had a different bird show up the other day too. I wasn't able to get a photo and haven't had a chance to try and ID him. Maybe they're migrating and just passing through?

I am sure he realizes he landed in Paradise. He just checked Birdie Trip Advisor and set his GPS for Run-A-Round Ranch and landed his feathery self at a 5 star resort! Dang Tex! Why can't I ever get here before there are 456785 million comments. You pop up on my Google Reader and I have you on my Favorites and I still can't make the first 4011 comments!

Good eye! I would have probably thought he was a finch.

(I'm going to have to move a feeder or two closer to my house, I am finding I have to use binoculars to see details of the visiting birds)

Fantastic shots!

Years ago I used to listen to tapes called "birding by ear", and they were the songs of pretty much every bird in North America. I remember that the Dickcissal says, "Dick dick dick ciss ciss ciss" when it sings. So you might keep an ear out for him!

Hi Texwisgirl, I have never seen one before. Boy are they cute. They do look sparrow-like and also a tiny bit like a Carolina Wren without the yellow breast area. Have the best Friday tomorrow!

If it didn't have the yellow, it could easily pass for a sparrow. Not sure I've ever seen one.
