Love these! Goldfinch stay here through the winter. I'm sure surprised they don't stay there. I wish I could put seed out like you do but it would be gone in a heartbeat due to tree rats. ha! Are those blackbirds in the trees? Great shot!

thesedaysofmine.com said...

I rarely see a goldfinch even during the summer here! You have such a wide variety of birds. Of course, we get the droves of blackbirds in the fall too.

Lisa @ Two Bears Farm said...

I love the goldfinches!

Woody said...

Now I know why I don't have any visitors, they're all hanging out at your place! Say hi for me and let them know I still like them even though they abandoned me. No hard feelings. Nope, I'm good. (can you throw a guilt trip at birds?)

trav4adventures said...

Oh, I love the woodpecker! I wish we had some here in the desert. They are actually up in our local mountains, but not here... :-(

Jan n Jer said...

Most of my birds are gone...havent had to fill the feeder in over a week!~ sigh :( Your so lucky to get so many winged visitors!

Very nice selection of birds. I won't see finches or the tufted titmouse until spring, but we do have woodpeckers who live in one of our trees. I have never seen a sparrow like that one. They must not frequent this area. Hubs fills the bird feeders and within 48 hours, they need refilled again. We need more food, too. lol

Rain said...

We have a terrible situation here-my neighbors and everyone for miles around have not had to refill feeders for weeks! Where have they gone?? It's very depressing and a little scary......
Your birds are what keep me going-even the suet which I usually have to refill every other day has been hanging there for a month? And black Friday sale at Tractor Supply-got 12 cubes suet for $5--geeze..........

Lynne said...

Why the hordes of blackbirds? Love the belly of the Harris Sparrow.

Yesterday at the finch feeder I had Redpole Finch, Goldfinch and a woodpecker,(kind?) hanging upside down from the feeder bottom.

No snow here, non predicted. 54 degrees at 7:30 in the morning in MICHIGAN!

My acorn/snow prediction is waaayyy off!

So pretty-our Goldfinch have headed south-wish I could have gone with them! We get tons of blackbirds...I find them a bit creepy!

Snapper II said...

We have them here but they seem to come in a wave and then they are gone.

Jennifer said...

Pretty bird pics.

Sandra said...

they are beautiful, each one of them, one looks like he is dancing on the edge. what is up with the hordes of crows/blackbirds? we have gazillions of them. we stood in amazement a couple of days ago while several miles of them, no lie, they were flying quietly, no noise and for a full five minutes they flew past us, and we could see in the distance several miles away they were going down to the preserve. it was amazing, we were awestruck. never seen that many since the old movie the birds. then yesterday they started again, but this time I heard them coming, they were screaming as they flew so we went out to watch.

Judy said...

So that's where my finches went to winter :)

Montanagirl said...

Nice shots! I saw a Harris's Sparrow in our yard a few days ago. I think he moved on, though.

Sharon said...

We seem to have lots of the Jays and Cardinals, but not very many of the little birds lately.

We had a couple huge flocks of some kind of black birds fly through, they didn't stop for a visit though.

Ron said...

Free food will bring them in everytime. The birds probably feel like they've won the lottery!

Fjällripan said...

So many birds in the air! I really liked the Harris sparrow, so beautiful!

Pattie @ On Hollyhock Farm said...

Great shots! My feeders are right outside my window and I watch them all day. Finches are gone, though. Last year I had a giant Piliated Woodpecker! He came everyday!
Thanks for sharing.

If I were a Bird the Ranch would be the place to live. So much food you can roll in it with plenty of water to wash it down. And a new fence to sit on while Sunning!

I don't think we've had goldfinches but then I don't put out birdseed, just the birdbaths. Maybe I shoud start doing that. I like your birdbath bird feeder.

Farm Girl said...

I love looking at your birds. My song sparrows when I walk in the morning flit from tree to tree. No matter how many laps I do they stay one tree in front of me. I wonder if I stir up bug or something.
The other morning I could hear the tap-tap of the flicker in the trees.
It is so nice to read you and know you are watching birds too.
Now if I could just get pictures of them. :)

Inger said...

Have you ever thought of making a coffee table book of your photos? They are so wonderful and we bloggers are blessed to see them every day. I seriously think there is a book there for bird lovers. Think about it for next Christmas. And how in the world can you know the names of all these little sparrows and finches?

Kathy said...

We're getting those huge flocks of blackbirds too! What a great idea to just put seed in a birdbath. That way they can just wallow in it!

I've never seen a Harris's sparrow before... so pretty!

Our goldfinches don't stick around long. I've seen them for maybe a week around here during Spring. I wish they would stay longer!

I am seriously considering putting out a couple of bird feeders to keep the wild birds out of the chicken feed. I'm tired of the flocks of sparrows leaving their droppings in the food. Nice woodpecker photos.

Brian King said...

You get a nice variety down there at the ranch! I don't much care for the blackbirds, starlings, or grackles - at least not at feeders when they show up en masse.

C. Joy said...

Thank you! Your post reminded me to go buy the seeds and put up my finch feeder. They seem to be here in FW all through the winter.

Wow, lots of colour and activity around your feeder. Thanks for naming them all, some of them are new to me.

Martha Z said...

That Harris's Sparrow is a new one for me. I'm surprised that the goldfinch migrate from your area, they are here all winter and our night temps can go into the 20s, days in the 40-50 range. I would think that similar to your area.

Andrew said...

All your birds are so lovely to see

Do you still see all the birds in Texas that you saw during your childhood?

Sylvia K said...

I do love your colorful, beautiful bird captures! Interesting about the blackbirds! We've had thousands of them -- in groups, flying all around and really filling the skies, particularly in the evening -- the day time seems to belong to the seagulls???? They haven't just been here this fall, but there are even more of them now!

I miss the variety of birds that you have. We used to have a thickly wooded, large lot that harbored scores of different types. I'm glad I can at least experience them now thru your blog.

Hi Texwisgirl, Love the picture of the little Downy and its friend at the feeder. Sweet. Excellent shots for the entire series. You have a lot of birds there. All I seem to have is a lot of European Starlings and a very few of this and that type of bird. Oh well. Once I put feeders out...
Have a wonderful day tomorrow!

Evelyn S. said...

I bought one of the rectangular/circle bird feeders....the goldfinches have come back and they seem to prefer the black sunflower seeds to the thistle seed! Strange! The thistle socks are still fill. I guess I should be happy, since that thistle seed is about $1.80 a lb, and sunflower seed is much less expensive.

bailey-road.com said...

Quite an attractive little Sparrow!
The squirrels are emptying our feeders as fast as we can fill them. I need a squirrel-chasing dog.

We had the bird hoards on Wednesday too. I remember noticing them last year and getting all kinds of shots as they picked the trees clean of berries. This year they spent far more time in the grass in front of my office building. Such interesting little creatures.

Hilary said...

A lovely collection of winged beauties. We're going through the seed like crazy too.

Here I Am Carrie Carrie said...

Well I bet you do go thru alot of bird seed. I have to go easy on it and only ration as we aren't here the entire winter when we head south. So don't want to many here so I can leave enough when we do leave to get them thru a couple months while we are gone. Also have had to come up with caging my feeders so the stellar jays and squirrels don't eat everything always right away. After many years I finally have it all worked out. Well if I don't see you again before Christmas I do hope you have a blessed.

Debbie said...

ooooohhhhh i love the harris sparrow, i don't see them here. i get goldfinches all winter but the yellow is very subtle.
