Warm Weather Critters

Nothing says warmer weather, here, than the awakening of scorpions. Biting flies? Buzzing bees? Vexing gnats? Whatever... Try sorting paperwork on the floor of your office, sometime, with the help of these beasties...

Thank goodness we only get the small, brown ones...

Still find it astonishing that something that looks like a scorpion actually exists!

...and you walk around barefoot!

The fact that you had the presence of mind to snap these photos with that nasty close by says a lot about you T - there is NO way I would have been that calm.

Gail said...

I just got paid back for all the times I scared Pat A View From The Edge with snakes and spiders.

Scorpions terrify me!!!! I was stung as a small child and when I see one, the same pain rushes from my foot to my hip. I am allergic to wasps and an exterminator told me, a scorpian sting is equal to about eight wasp stings...no wonder I remember the pain!

I still have to say...great photos.

eileeninmd said...

UGHHH, creepy. I would think they are not good.. big or small ones.

YIKES, was this inside your house?! I faintly remember seeing one back in 1968, the summer I stayed with my sister in Dumas, Texas. I also remember stepping on some huge burrs that grew in the grass!

WOW! I think I've only seen scorpions in Africa and Mexico, although we have them here too.

Lisa said...

Oh my . I love the photos they are fantastic but I have a hard time looking at this critter.

Eyeliquor said...

So Cool!

Breathtaking said...

Not a good think to have inside your home, you need to have eyes in the back of your head to prevent a nasty sting.Good pictures, but mind your step, especially when you go barefoot.

Tracy said...

Oh dear God, I'd pee my pants if I was sorting through things and this came about...my horoscope sign is the scorpio but I certainly wouldn't want to come across one...your photo is so detailed and distinct; great job Tex!

Linda said...

Holy Cow! Inside your house??? I would completely freak out and be afraid to sleep at night! And you think this one is small? He can still sting, right? Yikes!

Gone Country said...

Um, yikes, no thanks!

I've only seen two of them here and one was in the shower. I'm butt-naked stepping into the shower and there he was. Had to call the hubby to come take care of it since I didn't want to get dressed, heehee!

Very interesting. I don't think they have scorpions in the Philippines. At any rate, I have never seen a live one, though we have our share of pesky insects.

islandwonder said...

Yawza! The sight of one of those would stop me in my tracks.

Poetic Shutterbug said...

Ahhhhh!!!!! Is that a bark scorpion?!!! Those are THE worst with their sting! I didn't know you had those in your area. I shiver at the thought of stepping on one of those. We went camping south of Tucson and one was around my sleeping area. I don't like to kill things, but I have been known to exterminate a mosquito or scorpion on occassion. Snakes and Gila Monsters are left alone. I look at them and get the heebie jeebies but we respect each other:) Scorpions have no boundaries when it comes to hiding in bed sheets!!!

Donna said...

EEEEeeEEEEEeeeeeEEEEeeeK!

Sorry, but those things really freak me out!

Rose said...

Now those do give me the creeps!

Patty Woodland said...

NO ARACHNIDS!

Linda said...

Well now. THAT'S enough to keep me in Indiana. :)

We love to vacation in the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, and we rented a cabin one time that had scorpions in it. We questioned one of the rangers in the national park and were told that scorpions live virtually everywhere. The ones we saw in Tennessee, the ranger assured us, were not deadly. But still...

Definitely one of the things that I DON'T miss about Texas!!! Hope your weekend is off to a good start! Enjoy!

Nasty lookin' little buggers!

Mary Howell Cromer said...

Oooooh, small brown ones, larger brown ones, black ones, any kind of Scorpions would give me the frights. We traveled through New Mexico years ago and there was this place that had an aquarium with a Tarantula in one corner and a Scorpion in the other and the men were placing bets on what would kill what first. I refused to watch, or listen to the outcome~

This brought back memories of when we visited in Florida when I was a kid and we visited this island on the Florida Keys...watching one dark little scorpion walk the long length of a picnic table and down the other wooden leg while not one of us Minnesotans moved a muscle. *she shudders* I'd be wearing metal hip boots!

Ewwwwwww. Not long ago I was thinking that we should have moved to TX instead of NC. Now...I'm very thankful to be right where I am. I don't think I'd be able to sleep at night knowing those were around. You were brave to get the pictures!!!

Bernadine said...

Ewwww... we get these darn things too! They mysteriously appear in my husband's bathroom sink and once, I step on one in the wee hours of the morning in the kitchen!! What an awful surprise to turn on the lights and find out what that crunchy, squishy thing was! Ugh!!

Marie said...

One thing I just hated when we lived in Texas those five years were the scorpions. Fortunately we didn't get but one in our house, but our daughter briefly moved into a place that was infested with them, and our grandson was still quite small....she even found one in his crib! That did it! They had to break the lease, but they couldn't stay there! I know we have them here, but so far I haven't seen one, and my SIL has never seen one either and he is from here. I worry about rattlesnakes, too! :-) I guess I worry too much! :-)

Christian said...

Wow - glad we don't have those as secretaries over here!
