Dripping Jewels? Nah, Just Dipping Gem

One afternoon, Thelma Jean barked the alert of strange goings-on at the pond. I looked out to see what varmint had shown up and discovered Gem giving herself a bath. Sorry for the end of the fenceline in the front of these shots, but I didn't want to risk spoiling her fun by walking around trying to get a better angle. Lots of photos to follow.
Thelma Jean in front keeping an eye on the situation.

Up again.

Nope. Down for more.

Yes, I'm watching you.
Who's a pretty girl?

Gotta turn around.

Love the water gushing from her belly. Well, I guess from everywhere.

Wow, Gem, this angle is just not flattering for you.

Stopping for a munch on the way to the pasture.
Sorry if I've water-logged you with excessive images, but it's just not an everyday occurrence to have a horse take its own bath. Several of our horses have splashed at the pond's edge over the years, and they love to roll in mud puddles, but this is the one and only time I've ever seen one take a full-on dip. Thanks for hanging in there.

How joyful this post is. Isn't it wonderful to be able to watch an animal having so much fun swimming with and against the current, splashing, coming out and going back in again because it feels so good.
Thank you for your steadfast shooting.

Oh that was such a fun post. I've never seen a horse take a bath on it's own. My pony used to stand dead still everytime we walked through a stream, she was a bugger about that.

I could have watched that if there were 500 more photos. I loved it. I can just feel how she is feeling in the water because that's what water does to me. And I've swam (swum? swimmed?) in many a canal in Idaho.

Kjell T. Evensen said...

Looks like Gem had a good time swimming around and cooling down in the "pool." Beautiful series.

Linda said...

Well, I've never seen anything like this before. Of course, when I had horses, I didn't have a pond. My faithful old Half-Arabian mare did try to roll in a mud puddle once...while I and a young cousin were riding her. She just dropped like a rock when her feet hit that puddle. But Gem was having a great time, between rolling in the water and splashing at it with her hooves. What a treat that must have been for her.

And, by the way, that angle isn't flattering for any of us. ;)

Kathy said...

And just think how impossible this would have been last year! It's wonderful that your pond is being replenished so she can take a bath whenever she wants. And the water looks very nice and clear. Our ponds aren't so nice over here in Deep East Texas. Since so much of our land is red clay, the ponds and rivers often have a red cast to them.

Lois Evensen said...

Was that a Friday bath? Perhaps she has a date! :)))

Just wonderful series. :)

ellen abbott said...

back when I was doing the river guide thing on the Rio Grande in Big Bend it wasn't unusual to come across a horse or two or three standing in the river.

Love this! When I managed an Arabian farm in Ga., we had a 2 yr. old gelding named Metallica. He love the pond! He would splash around in it all day long! I bought him a beach ball and after a week of watching it float, he finally figured out it would be fun to play with. He pop it with his nose over and over :) Smart guy he was!

Gem is gorgeous!

We have horses and a pond. Yep,bath taking is not a frequent occurance, but we had one who would take a big gulp of air and blow Bubbles!
