Goofy bird(s)!

A little background story: One morning I heard a strange sound, similar to a dog whimper. I looked out on the porch - two of our dogs were sitting there, unconcerned. I heard it again so I went outside, walked around the deck until I heard it again. It sounded like it was coming from the roof! I went back inside to don shoes to investigate further, when I happened to look up at the center of the house which is a 9-sided skylight and saw a silly roadrunner standing on it! I grabbed my point and shoot camera, but before I could snap a few photos, he had hopped off. I ran outside and was able to catch a few of him on the roof.

Graceful dismount!

Off he goes!
To hear the sound that I thought was a dog whimper (at least from inside the house), here's a link to the Cornell Lab site - play the first sound of the 'call/rattle'.

To give you an idea of how silly the bird looked sitting on the skylight, here's photos of a hawk that landed there a few weeks after this roadrunner was up there. Must be a popular look-out perch.

Well, hello!

And, goodbye!

You could start a new photo meme - Birds From Below. Might not be too pleasant for participants without a skylight though.

Those are nice captures of an elusive bird! They are considered to be birds, even if they are kind of goofy ones. Love your skylight! What a great perch spot.

ellen abbott said...

The hawk I can understand, the road runner up there, not so much. Kind of a high perch for a road runner.

That's really cool! The only roadrunner I'd ever seen before this was the one being chased by Wile E. Coyote.

Mariette VandenMunckhof-Vedder said...

Dearest Theresa,

That was indeed a very goofy bird view! The Greater Roadrunner's call is funny and they name it a ground-dwelling cuckoo that feeds on snakes and scorpions. Brave one!
Hugs to you,
Mariette

Patty Woodland said...

They are silly birds but I did love watching them when we were in New Mexico.

Now I have never caught any bird on my skylight. How cool would that be?

Brian King said...

LOL! The first one is my favorite! It's like he was trying to be sneaky! That's a cool view of the hawk from underneath. It took me a second to get oriented. You should be okay as long as an ostrich doesn't perch there.

Such great views of the bird - wonderful that you got to see him on your roof!

How funny! And here I thought that they actually went beep-beep!

Ms. A said...

Oh, WOW! Maybe it's not that it's a good look-out persch, but a good look-IN perch. Can they see inside?

I don't have skylights in my house. Too much Texas sun would drive me nuts and my house is hard enough to keep cool as it is.

Fantastic photos! Roadrunners are goofy and fun...but the first time I saw one hunting birds in my Texas Sage, well, it kind've dampened my enthusiasm for their cuteness! :-) OK, I just showed the photos you did to my hubby....he said to ask your permission to use them on his facebook page...he will give "Theresa in Texas" credit. He thought they were a hoot! :-)
