A Barred Owl from Earlier This Summer

Yes, I used the flash (obviously). No, I didn't try the red-eye reduction setting (obviously). Something to 'shoot for' next year. :)

You've got some GREAT shots here.

I'm not sure if the red-eye reduction would work for an owl. On people, the flash pulses lower power light to cause the pupil constrict. I'm not sure of the owl's pupil will react the same way.

You can remove red-eye after the fact with photoshop or gimp

Great shots, regardless of the red eye. For some reason, ONE of my granddaughters always has red eye, when nobody else does and when I try to edit it, it looks freaky as all get out.

Red eyes or not, they are great shots!

Sharon Lovejoy said...

Well, first I have to say that using the red-eye stopper on your camera would've ruined it for me. When I wrote my book Toad Cottages and Shooting Stars, the Barred owl was one of my favorite pairs of eyes to depict for the eye-glow (tapetum) section for children. FABULOUS.

We've been in Texas for a few days and have loved every minute of it. First at The Natural Gardener in Austin, then up in Stephenville, now down in Austin again to do a filming of Central Texas Gardener on KLRU. We have really enjoyed all the gracious people here.

Best,

Sharon

Theresa great shots. I love how close you were able to get. The barn owls up here don't drink as much as yours and hence ours don't have the red eyes ;)

Super close-ups of the Barred Owl Theresa! Even though these owls are displacing Spotted Owls in the West, I have yet to see one!

Linda said...

These are spectacular, Theresa. I took some pictures of an owl several years ago, using a flash, and got the resulting red eye. I tried to edit it out, but my hubby preferred the red-eyed version. He liked the spooky look of it. I ought to dig those photos out and take another look at them. They won't be any competition for yours, though. These are just wonderful.

Paula said...

I like the red eyes but then as you know I'm not a photographer.

Do you have a bunk that is open ... I am on my way:) I love the Barred Owls, but we rarely see them in the wild up here. They like deep woods and riparian areas that are hard to get to at night. I would sell my soul (not quite) to be able to listen to a pair conversing at night ... they are amazing. Enjoyed!
