Goodbye, sweet Tuxedo

We lost our beloved barn cat yesterday. Not yet 9 years old, he was born here at Run*A*Round. We gave it our best shot to get him through an illness, but we lost the fight. We will miss our handsome boy...

The best mouser, birder, bunnyer, frogger and snaker we could have ever hoped for, and the sweetest barn companion to the horses. Rest in peace, dear boy.

Warm Weather Critters

Nothing says warmer weather, here, than the awakening of scorpions. Biting flies? Buzzing bees? Vexing gnats? Whatever... Try sorting paperwork on the floor of your office, sometime, with the help of these beasties...

Thank goodness we only get the small, brown ones...

Just a day on the pond

Mallard drake, Hooded Merganser pair and Great Blue Heron.

Uh oh. A 'third wheel' merganser to contend with.

A little power boat evasive action.

 No drama in solitude.

The Winner of the March 2012 Giveaway is...

Michelle from It's a Small Town Life! Michelle (previously known as 'Farmchick') is a wonderful, long-time blogger friend, so I'm pleased to have pulled her name from the hat to win this Female Cardinal drawing. Michelle, this bird will be on its way to Smalltownland, Kentucky, soon!

Thanks, again, to all who entered and commented. I'll be working on something for April (soon, I hope!)

A few more fence views.

A few more photos from late January.
Obviously some Texas and Tennessee loyalties at Belle Meade

Instead of titling their ranch gate, these folks opted for fancy off-side gate signage.
You might remember one of their random fence panels from this past Monday's Just One Barn post.

This reminded me of 'The Big W' from 'It's A Mad-Mad-Mad-Mad World'

Except this time, the big tree is behind the W, not part of it.

Some Steamy Scenes

Now that I have your attention, I'll use this post as a cell phone photo dump, of sorts. The steamy scenes were from the end of January. A foggy, cool morning, steam was rising off Zim's butt as he ate his breakfast in the barn.

Gem wasn't steamed, at all.
Tuxedo may have been a bit miffed at having his photo taken.
The next few scenes are from February. We've not had any further interlopers invading our back pasture from across the creek/woods. However, Next Door Neighbor ended up with a young stud in her pasture for a couple of days. It took us and another elderly neighbor about 2 hours one day to chase him back across the fenceline and get it re-wired up, again.
While back there, saw Mr. Longhorn that had previously worn the hammock tangled across his horns. He was looking much freer and more comfortable this visit. Sorry for the shots into the sun, but I wasn't going to try to find a better angle from his side of the fence.

Finally, a few shots from March. These were taken from the barn loft window while I was hanging out with Tuxedo one afternoon. The pond received more good rain and run-off this month. Things are greening up nicely.
You can see two black-bellied whistling ducks standing on the pipe fence section.

Whistler wonders

Some days, these ducks just make me laugh...
Black-Bellied Whistling Ducks
Sitting on the bird bath we use as a bowl feeder.

Look away for a second to look at the rest of the flock...
and another jumps onto the bath/feeder.

Ghost Horse II

Last year, I posted Gem running the trail around the pond as Ghost Horse.  Several of you compared the photos to a Bev Doolittle painting.  Seems Gem was up for a repeat performance this year.

Cormorant on the pond

Not the clearest photos, but I thought the reflections were worth sharing.
