Roadrunner Wrap-Up Post from Last Fall

One more look at "Skinny Chicken" from last fall on our deck.

He's approaching the windows/sliding glass doors.
That blob in the lower left is Baron's head (our Black Lab)

That's Baron's head again to the left - inside the glass while Skinny Chicken is outside, almost nose to beak.

 What's got him so intrigued?
A dead hummingbird that hit the window too hard and broke its neck.

After dropping it a few times and carrying it off the deck, Skinny Chicken realized it wasn't a big, green, juicy bug and he didn't touch it again.
Linking to Wild Bird Wednesday

Thanks, Hilary!

Skinny Chicken is a Road Runner isn't he??? So they hang around on your deck? Funny - because our school mascot is the Road Runner! Not sure how we got him as our mascot since we don't have them here in Georgia!! Poor hummingbird!!

Jeanne said...

Wow, can't believe that road runner was up on your deck so close... Did he eat that poor hummer? Great shots and you really caught his personality.

Linda said...

The roadrunner does seem to have a comical aspect to him. I can see why he was the subject of many cartoons when I was growing up. Don't you wonder what was going through Baron's mind as all this was going on within inches of his nose?

Amazing that you were able to capture these pics.

I love these crazy birds. When I had my tree, I found a pair up in it, about to rob a nest. I had some difficulty chasing them away. They are not exactly shy or easily scared.

Ken Schneider said...

Nice series! I was surprised to see them looking for hummingbird nests high in the trees in Albuquerque. Funny he didn't accept the free meal! Despite living in New Mexico for eleven years, I never got a good shot of their State Bird. (Of course I did not get my first DSLR until a few years later, after we moved to Florida).

A fine series of this bird and his interest in the dead bird. You get excellent focus in your gird shots. This series is a prime example of your technical skill.

Karen S. said...

We had a bird hit our deck window pretty hard, but I let it lay there most of the day, (kitty cats kept at bay!) and believe it or not it must have been stunned, because it finally did come to, and after moving slowly it finally took off on it's own!

I'm surprised it wasn't scared of the dog even with it on the other side of the glass door. You could write a cute little story with captions - - - like where the dead bird is picked up a couple of times - - say something like, "I'll help you back in the air - - just try!"

I love seeing the Roadrunner! Every now and then we have a bird hit our windows really hard. I hate when that happens. Sometimes they are just stunned, other times the window wins.

Love your pictures of Skinny Chicken. Poor little hummingbird. I find it interesting that Skinny Chicken messed with it a bit and then moved on to bigger and better food. Reminds of Trouble the cat. I am VERY surprised he didn't eat the hummingbird! My hubby watched one hunt birds in our Texas Sage bush, carry them down to the ground, pluck out their breast feathers and then eat them! They visit that Texas sage a lot because the songbirds love to hide in it! Maybe because he didn't kill the bird himself, that confused him. Great pictures!

By the way, wanted to tell you that the museum here will allow access to the lead crosses by appointment! I am so excited about that!
