Red-Belly

A male Red-Bellied Woodpecker at the feeder.

Lovely shock of red hair on his head.

And just a tinge of red feathering on his belly to give him his name.

A male cardinal shows up in the feeder hanging behind and sort of photo bombs the woodpecker.

Woodpecker moves to the platform dish feeder.

At least he gets this stage all to himself.

Nice day Crissi

We get them at the feeder sometimes too.. They are easy to spot on a tree or feeder because of their size.

Dearest Theresa;
Wow, how beautiful your Red-Bellied Woodpecker is☆☆☆ Your beautiful pictures really show his tinge of red feathering on his belly. I loved the picture second one from the last♡♡♡
And of course the ones with blurry back cardinal in them(^_^)v

Sending you lots of love and hugs from Japan to my American photographer friend, xoxo Miyako*

Red-bellied woodpeckers are, in my opinion, the most handsome of woodpeckers. This little guy makes a good show at your feeder!

troutbirder said...

They are a handsome bird indeed. Strangely enough in recent years we've seen many more of them and far fewer of the red headed variety here in Bluff Country....

Dianna said...

Amazing photos!

Pix Under the Oaks said...

That really is a neon kinda red. I know the red on a Pileated is RED but this is such a beautiful red. We had a juvenile Red-Bellied at the feeder this past summer and he was a big baby still begging for food. Very funny!

These are terrific shots, Theresa. The third is my favorite, I think; but they're all really good. Mr. Cardinal just had to pop in and show the star of the post what real red looks like.

Just gorgeous. What a beautiful creature! I had to look that up a few months ago because I was wondering why they called it 'red bellied' That red is definitely not an outstanding characteristic. Love to see birds at the feeder.
