Whistlers on Wednesday 62

During the crush of Whistler feedings through our December freezes, I tried adding a bit of food from the pantry - some old Corn Chex cereal and a few soda crackers. I figured if other ducks at ponds eat them, maybe the Whistlers could snack a bit between meals of scratch feed.
They're picking out the seeds from the ground but not touching the crackers or cereal.
They were not having any of it.

The Crows, however, came to the rescue.
They cleaned it up in a matter of minutes.
Even before the squirrels could get any.

"What? I missed cereal and crackers?"

Leave it to the squirrels to crash a party.

Hi Tex. what a lot of Whisterls and they sure know what is good to eat. love Mr Squirrel, I think he is waving to us today!

Crows are smart enough to recognize food in any form. Those whistlers are indeed picky eaters. They have their figures to think of! :-)

Abraham Lincoln said...

We have a Crow family that stops here each day and eats some of the dog food I put in the driveway. When I hear them cawing I put it out because the starlings will eat it before they get here if I don't wait on them to call me.

messymimi said...

If he could have, the squirrel would have eaten it. We had one come up to my daughter once and beg for a french fry! The whistlers seem to know better to stick to a natural diet, which is healthier for them, i'm sure.

Picky birds! Love the squirrel!

Nancy's Notes said...

Oh, of course our little whistler friends, they were waiting for the main course! Now squirrel boy and his buddy there, they are like Mikey, they will eat anything!

The crows do a great job of clean-up. Don't know if it was them or some other black bird but I tossed some bread out on the snow and it was gone in no time! Speaking of snow... We have up to a foot coming, starting tonight. Florida is starting to sound really good:@)

Well done the crows as soon Buba won't be able to climb a tree LOL. Have a wonderful Wednesday.

That is pretty funny about them being picky eaters. Great photos as always. The squirrels seem to be a bit slow getting out of their nests during this cold weather. The crows not so much ;)

Bubba doesn't need any carbs...funny, his out stretched paw reminds me of me when someone takes away my mashed potatoes or bowl of popcorn.

What? No Chex? Crazy duckies.

I like this series about the whistlers. As to crows, they eat the leftover of deer crackers in Nara Park.

Cute! Love your dialogue too. You are quite clever in figuring out what that squirrel might be saying. Oh, and it took only two tries to get my reading list to show up today. Wish they'd make that a little easier.

Oh crows are so funny. They do like garbage.
I love that photo of the duck with grass hanging out of his mouth.

I did the same thing with cheerios to feed the masses of house sparrows, they didn't touch them. I think the squirrels munched them once the peanuts were gone!

The sequence of pictures in this series make a great story. I'm impressed with how much ducks gather together. Those crafty crows were lucky to beat out the squirrels.

The Whistlers would consider the cereal and stale crackers as trash for the crows, and wait for the main course. Whats for dessert?

Ducks prefer seeds have such needs. Crows will eat anything. The squirrel probably had the desire. Yours.

So cute! Do whistlers not need to wet their dryer foods in order to eat them? I've always understood that mallards need to be fed stuff like that in or by the water so that they can moisten them.
