Boys-Girl-Boys

Tried to snap a photo of three male Cardinals all in one spot, and one took a header off the branch just as I clicked the shutter.
A sweet-looking female Brown-Headed Cowbird relaxes in the feeder tree.

Four Mallard drakes paddle around the pond together.

We have lots of cardinals around our bird feeder. Lately I noticed only one who is hanging around, and I wonder at the absence of its mate?!

So many nice birds. I miss the colorful varieties now that I'm here in Europe. Most birds are brown, black or gray.

Always like seeing the Cardinals. I wonder why they don't spread out over here to Montana? I've only seen one in person in my life, in 2007; A female showed up on my birdbath after a huge wind/rain/hailstorm blew through our area. I was pretty excited to see her!

Brian King said...

He's in free fall. :-) Nice one of the cowbird! I like the crisscrossing branches. Not sure if it's just me, but the mallards seem to have very yellow bills. More so than what I usually see.

bailey-road.com said...

Despite their parasitic habits, I also think the female cowbirds are pretty and sweet looking. I once had a one-legged female hanging around for a while and she was always accompanied by a seemingly devoted male.

Now here we see the results of the cowbird being a parasite to other birds. It's pretty awful to see a chipping sparrow feeding a bird twice as big as itself.

I spotted another new bird in the yard today, I spent a lot of time trying to identify it. I said to Hubbers, I might just have to put it on the blog and see if anyone knows what it is. I bet Tex will know! I finally found it this afternoon, a female Brown-headed Cowbird! Wish I had of stopped by your blog earlier today!!!

Linda said...

Hello little birdies! I'm trying to ease my feathered friends off their dependence on my bird feeders because bears have been seen around the neighborhood and I don't want to attract them.
