Good Fences #28

This place on the way to town is on a rather dangerous curve that has hosted several serious accidents. They made their very heavy fence out of old electrical poles. Still, several vehicles have run through it, and it takes quite an effort to make repairs (they use a tractor to hoist the poles into place.)
I would not want my windshield meeting up with those rails.
Here's the link-up!

1. Link in a post featuring a photo or photos of fences or gates.
2. Link back to Run*A*Round Ranch Report in your post or use the badge code to display the Good Fences button in your post that automatically links back here.
3. If time allows, please visit some of the other participants and comment on their shared posts.

Thank you!

Oh my, that is a sturdy fence. Where did they get enough of those telephone poles to make it?

Brian King said...

That is a serious fence! It's probably better for the driver, though. We've had numerous collisions here where people were impaled by the boards of standard plank fences.

Tanya Breese said...

now that's not going anywhere!

It is a sturdy fence! I can imagine the damage to the cars after hitting that fence! Great finds! Thanks for hosting have a great day!

I was going to say the same as Brian. Wonder why the county doesn't do something about the curve, like banking it or better signage. At least the driver won't get far into the property.

Frank said...

Looks very sturdy.

Roan said...

Now that's a fence! Sturdy and looks nice, too.

Bethany Carson said...

That's a good idea for the use of old telephone poles! When poles are replaced around here, they are given to whoever will take them, so various people have piles of old poles in their yards. We've wondered what uses they could find for them.

Blackberry Lane said...

I would hate to hit that.
hope to rejoin you next week for the linkup.

Now that's one serious "don't mess with me" fence. Nice shot though :-)

Drivers should drive cautiously in this area! Thanks for hosting. Have a nice day!

It certainly looks heavy duty and sturdy. Some roads need extra care from drivers, and you'd think if they live there, they'd know it.

Revrunner said...

Geez! Maybe they ought to try bollards next time. :-)

If only drivers would SLOW down. But since they don't, it's good to see there's a sturdy fence there.

We have a neighbor whose house sits on a bad "s" curve, where if a car misses the turn, the house gets hit. They have a fence made of a telephone pole, and I am amazed at how many cars either go right through it, or flip over it! It's amazing that no one has been seriously hurt!

Lynne said...

One massive fence . . . I wouldn't want to be in my car and hit that fence. I think it would be a Dead Stop!
Wonder like some of the others way the bad curve on the road hasn't been restructured.

Unusual use of old telephone poles. Too bad people have to go so fast and loose control. What's the rush?

great looking fence. I would think it would be simple enough if folks just slowed down on the curve and stayed on there own side of the road.

Julia said...

It would make great perches for the Whistlers don't you think? I bet it was out of frustration that the rancher made this sturdy fence. Fixing busted fences is time consuming and costly. Drivers should slow down in the curve or they'e in for a rude awakening.
Hugs,
JB

That's a great fence - but I can see how the cars would come out on the short-end of an accident!

It looks like a strong fence, but how far down into the ground do the posts go?

Sturdy as she goes. Thanks for sharing.

Oh my goodness, it would be nearly doomsday for anyone to hit those poles! Surely it would total any windshield!

orchid Miyako said...

OMG!!! I wondered the curve itself should be renewed or driver should slow down a bit... Sure look strong fence, isn't it☆☆☆
Please don't get close to the place :-)

Thank you very much for hosting,Theresa.

You do what you have to do to protect your homestead ... Too bad they have to. But, for all of it's sturdiness, which is the purpose, it is rather attractive as well. I assume you navigate that curve very carefully :)

Dangerous, indeed! Good thing the house isn't any closer. Around here, people have large boulders set in front of their place if their homes are situated at a curve. Either way, devastating results.

Thanks for hosting!

A fine shot of this remarkable fence. I can imagine they sustained considerable frustration before they moved to something so massive.

Ida said...

Oh I think you're right it would not be a good thing to run into one of those poles. Very neat looking fence but I bet the owners wish the curve could be straigtened out. Great fence shots.

A timely reminder Theresa to slow down and pay attention to the road.

Enjoy your weekend.

Looks formidable. My husband used old telephone poles for his riding arena. It's gone now, but you've probably seen the lone poles in some of my photos. They will probably still be there long after we are gone.

Bob Bushell said...

I love the fences, but, I never contribute, ah well, those who do, really really great.

Good and sturdy! Maybe people should slow down rounding that curve!

Robin Lamb said...

T, I wouldn't want to run into it either! Makes for a nice fence though!

Black Jack's Carol said...

They've clearly done their best with the fence. It is sturdy and I would think, easily seen. Perhaps the highway crew needs to do some work on that curve, or perhaps, people just need to slow down. Here's to no more accidents!

Sally Crowe said...

Nope, wouldn't want to run into that. Wouldn't want to live there either.

A good solid fence, however you can't keep fools from going through it.

Sallie (FullTime-Life) said...

A sturdy fence for a dangerous corner. We had friends who had to do something similar because cars kept landing in their front yard. She said they hated to hear that noise in the middle of the night.

That fence certainly looks sturdy enough to do serious damage to a car.

That fence would probably survive a nuclear blast.

I like that fence!

We know the feeling of having a vehicle plow through your fence many times. At the ranch it seems they never veer to the other side of the road. We've even had a truck pulling a trailer go through and turn over. Sometime they fix or have the fence fixed and a lot of time it is illegals and the truck is reported stolen so John falls heir to the job.

Jeanne said...

Very interesting. Too bad it keeps getting knocked down.

When I was growing up, we had a house on the corner. Once a drunk driver didn't make the turn and ran straight through the fence into our backyard. The police said it's not an uncommon occurrence, but for us it was pretty exciting!
