A lovely grackle. He looks so inquisitive like he was startled.

Grackles were very common back where I grew up. I can still here their distinctive calls :)

They may be called common, but I still think they're bOOtiful

YOU make the grackle a gorgeous creature!! Oh, that color... don't you wish we had plumage that beautiful? ;)

Through your lens he doesn't look common to me! In fact, i don't know that we have any of those around here.

They are colorful, for sure, but so pesky. Our HEB (grocery) has a recording of them to try to discourage their congregating in the parking lot.

John Wooldridge said...

Beautiful looking bird, a member of the crow family?

Nature's beauty has no limits. I love the way he eyes the bird bath guard in photo #3 and gives it the evil eye!

Is he common to your birdbath? If not, why do they call it 'common'. What great coloring on his neck.

ellen abbott said...

they are gorgeous birds when the sun hits them right. too bad they act like a motorcycle gang when they swoop through.

Mary Hone said...

Don't you love the noises they make? We call them Walmart birds because no matter where we are, they are in the parking lot.

They are really intelligent. We see them all the time in the parking lots going under cars in the summer to drink what drips from the air conditioner. And they will come and sit and watch us eat in the car, waiting for us to throw them something. The other day at Wallyworld, I saw one with a curly fry. Everyone around here hates them because there are millions of them here and they poop all over the place...and in the morning, they all congregate on the parking lot at HEB and have their morning meeting. It's hilarious. The parking lot is black with them. I think I took a picture with my phone a while back....I'll have to look and post it on my blog. I don't remember ever looking at it after I took it and don't know if you will be able to tell what they are, but I'm going to look and see. Do they do that there, too? And all hang out on the power lines at night, all lined up like in THE BIRDS?

Cranberry Morning said...

It really is quite a beautiful bird, except for that beady little eye.

Sylvia K said...

What a handsome fellow!!

Andrea Priebe said...

They call them common because there are so many and in that respect they are ... common. But, really they are anthing but common if you look at their beautiful coloring and bright yellow eyes. These are great shots, Theresa. We don't have any grackles up here this winter. Usually one or two will hang around, but I have nothing but startlings in my feeder flocks.

Handsome is the right word...they really are beautiful.

When in California, there were the great-tailed grackles at this one park we went to...and what a mess of noises they made...I don't know whether I am happy or sad that the common grackles are quieter. The great-tailed grackle was fun to listen to for a spell, but think it would get old if it had not been so new to me.

He seems to be comparing poses with the concrete bird. The photos are phenomenal of the various colors of iridescence, and cute poses and captions, I like Mr. Crankypants and Handsome Devil.
