Sundog Surprise

One recent afternoon after feeding the horses, I walked back from the barn and was surprised to see a sundog forming in the western sky. Our temperature that day was in the 50sF, but apparently there were enough ice crystals in the atmosphere to catch and refract the setting sun's rays.

It's so amazing when they appear. I think I can only count seeing just a few of them, much less often than a rainbow. I only discovered what they were called a couple of years ago.

Aren't they amazing? I'd never heard of them until a few years ago when Marshall taught me, now I love to spot them. I captured photos of one on Dec. 27 - just curious as to whether or not that was the day you took these photos???? Is it possible that you and I could see the same sundog???

I always learn something from you, I'd never heard the term 'sundog'. So now I want to photograph one with a polarizing filter. Maybe this afternoon I can find one, I hear ice crystals are in my future.

When I lived in the Central Valley in California we would get sunbows, but that was always during warm weather. I've never heard of a sundog before! Very cool!

It's a beautiful, distinct sundog. I hadn't noticed or heard of sundogs until my early days of blogging when I saw one and referred to it as an odd rainbow.. or something. One of my blog people out west enlightened me and I stared seeing them everywhere... but not for a while, now. Photography sure opens the eyes to new things.. as do other bloggers. Thanks for the sunshine and colour.

I am currently reading a book about the great blizzard of 1888. Sun dogs played a part in the disastrous blizzard that took hundreds of lives many of them school children caught out on the open prairie.
