Corn Kernel Crow

An American Crow dips a piece of cracked corn in the bird bath in hopes of softening it.

Letting it soak for a moment.

Dearest Theresa; OMG; I knew they ARE really intelligent but never thought this wise. Reminds me of the monkeys somewhere in Japan soak sweet potatoes into the sea water to make them soften and taste better p:-)
Your photographs are gorgeously telling us their smartness☆☆☆

Crows are really smart birds. They can even recognize faces, which is why scarecrows don't really work. :)

Great shots of that shiny crow!! We have about five that hang around trying to snatch peanuts that I put out for the squirrels -- and they do succeed much of the time!!

I hereby name this this glossy guy ... Colonel Kernel.

No "birdbrains" here. Crows are known to be highly intelligent. It is believed that they, like humans and elephants, mourn their dead, and they also have been known to use tools to aid in food preparation. I suppose the water here would be such a tool.

Love it! We were watching blackbirds do the same thing last summer. We threw out leftover popcorn and were noticing that they used the birdbath to soften pieces. So smart!

Crows are fascinating birds. You got some great shots of this one. That seems an awful lot of trouble to go through for one kernel of corn, though.

T, nice ones! There seems to be something about crows dipping their dinner! We have them around here, dippers that is, not crows! They use the neighbours eaves trough and put whatever they have to soak in the standing water!

pattisjarrett said...

Between the crows and grackles, there's always something floating in the birdbath. Lately, I'm finding peanut shells.
