I Need a Dose O' Whistlers

These photos are from last year about this time, although I did see a 'pack of marauding juveniles' stop here recently to dine on the scratch feed buffet line (I just haven't processed those photos yet.) So here's a rambunctious young bunch from August 2014.

Just love their blue bills and dried leaf-colored feathers.

There were some parental units hanging nearby.
After snacking 'til their bellies were full, they retreated to the edge of the pond to rest and preen for a while.

And then a little while later, stormed back up from the pond like a gang of thugs to dine again. :)

looks like a teen hang out for them and maybe they will come back as adults since it is august once again.

I had to do some research to figure out your reference to a whistler. I never heard of a duck referred to that way before. Now I know something new! They are cute especially in a large group like this. I was also checking out your very unique home. I was in a octagon house once in the 70's and realized how challenging it was to set up furniture. Looks like you're in a very nice spot there especially with having a pond nearby. Does it stay wet year round or does it go through a dry spell?

Nancy Chan said...

Sometimes it is good to be still and watch these little beauties going about their business. We can learn many things about them. I like the picture with their bums up..lol!

Linda at To Behold The Beauty said...

You perfectly described their color with your "dried leaf" comment. And they do resemble a gang of thugs as they attack the buffet.

You get some great entertainment, I can see how you would miss them. They look like quite the energetic mob. Do they ever try to eat your plants? The adults are so colorful, I like the orange bill and cute expression of the one on the bird bath, with the eye ring for accent and seemingly topknot sticking up a little. They really put on a show!
