Good Fences #89

The spotted donkeys down on the corner. They guard a herd of beef cattle (keeping coyotes away from vulnerable young calves.)

And they keep a good eye on passers-by.
Here's the link-up!

1. Link in a post featuring a photo or photos of fences or gates.
2. Link back to Run*A*Round Ranch Report in your post or use the badge code to display the Good Fences button in your post that automatically links back here.
3. If time allows, please visit some of the other participants and comment on their shared posts.

Thank you!

I have a soft spot for donkeys! Love the markings on these ones.

Hello, I just love these adorable donkeys and their spots. I did not know they are used to guard the other animals. Cool.

Great shots, thanks for hosting. Have a happy day!

They have unusual markings. I had not heard about their use in protecting a herd against coyotes.

Dearest Theresa; It was kind of fresh surprise knowing these lovely donkeys work as guardians. I thought their main job is drawing carriage :-)
We had COLD pouring rain today, I made "nabe" for dinner. (maybe I'll post about this dish sometime later, haha)☆☆☆

Sending Lots of Love and Hugs from Japan to my Dear friend in America, xoxo Miyako*

I've heard of this before and think it's amazing. Does it work for wolves too, and what is it about donkeys that scares off a coyote? Good donkey.

Brian King said...

How cute! Apparently, they only require a simple fence, too!

I've never spotted spotted guard donkeys before.

I'm pretty sure this is the first spotted donkey I've ever seen. Farmers in my area use donkeys and/or llamas for the same guard duty.

Such cute neighbors you have! Love that there is life behind the fences....I always think that is a bonus.

Donkeys are used here in Mississippi to guard the cattle from coyotes, but they are all brown. Never seen a spotted one!

OMW Those spotted donkeys look like cows we have here in SA. Would you call them CONKEYS? LOL Yes, we also have donkeys (grey ones, albeit) in with a beef herd to protect the calves from jackals. I've also seen them "guarding" flocks of sheep and their lambs. Thanks for hosting this meme.

I don't recall that type of barb wire fencing, looks effective, but a couple of cute donkeys help defend the stock too. :)

What cuties behind that fence! I guess if you can't have a Scottie to watch guard, then a spotted donkey works great! ...even better I've no doubt! :-)!

Julia said...

They are very useful and are beautiful. I didn't know they were guardian for the cattle. Nice job.

They look good natured. We had a couple of donkeys in the fields at the farm behind our property growing up. They were always in with the herd of cows.

Dogs seemed to dislike them profoundly.

Barb said...

Guard donkeys? They look too cute to scare anyone or anything!

MartiDIY said...

I can't say I'm a big donkey fan, but those are cute. A lot of people around us have goats and usually have a donkey or two with them. But they aren't cute, just the usual brown ones.
