Painted Bunting Brood

These photos were shot about this time in prior years, but much the same scenery is seen outside my window now. There's always a good crop of Painted Buntings around each summer (and squirrels, too!)

Early July
Male Painted Bunting keeping watch on the squirrel in the feeder behind him.

Determining it's okay to eat.

Most likely, a female Painted Bunting keeping an eye on things around her.
Making sure the Chickadee means no harm.
Determining it's okay to eat.
Late July
Another male. Another squirrel.

A juvenile male.

You can see the blue feathering coming in on his shoulders.

Chickadee checking out a male Painted Bunting (with yet another squirrel...)
Early August
A couple of juveniles...

squabbling over a seat at the table.

A couple of males going through molt, looking exhausted.

A female Cardinal in the background.

Farewell to another breeding season...

the tree birds are much alike in size and shape, each has different coloring ... i can't deside which i like best of the color schemes. the bunting or the black and white chickadee. i do love color but black and white is my favorite

T, beautiful bird shots! The Bunting is so pretty! Makes me wonder why they evolved so brightly! I have never seen one! Yet! We had a Lazuli Bunting hanging around a while ago. I'd never seen one of them either. Problem was he was too elusive for a photograph! I enjoyed seeing him nonetheless!

You are so blessed to be able to enjoy these beautiful birds in your own yard. Of course, I know you bribe them with birdseed, but still... In your shots, the squirrels look like some sort of monsters. I love it!

Birds keep to a fairly rigid schedule. I record spring arrivals and most times they arrive within a ten day period.

Who needs a TV when you can watch the colorful goings on at the bird feeder.

On a side note I'm thinking it's a good thing the Good Lord didn't decide to give Squirrels wings, can you imagine all the extra trouble they would get into!

The male Painted Bunting definitely is not a bird to be drawn in ink. Colored pencil only. The female maybe. Hope you are doing well with the new routine.

Those squirrels are so brave and nosy! It doesn't seem to bother the birds though. How neat to see the painted buntings! Nothing here but the martins and the barn swallows and of course the starlings and sparrows. Yesterday I was headed down the driveway and saw a pair of cardinals, first shot of color here in a month. Have a great week, Tex!

I haven't seen a painted bunting in years and the little chickadees are my very favorite. We have way too many squirrels to put out feeders. Keeping them filled would be a full time job! Glad you have success and a camera to capture your critters and to share their beauty.

I love those buntings! Oh how I wish I could put a feeder in our yard. We have these beauties in the local wetlands and they surely would come to us. Maybe I'll put up a very small one and hope that I am not accused of feeding the ducks against local regulations. They absolutely modded my feeders when I first moved here but they attracted Monk Parakeets and Muscovy Ducks which knocked them down and mobbed our (and neighbors') properties!
